At the Peak of its Popularity, Taste of Chengdu Takes a Vacation

The Sichuan restaurant takes leave of absence and plans to reopen in August as something new.

Taste of Chengdu in Baldwin Park is set to close for vacation for a month and reopen with a new brand in August. When reached on the phone, Paula Ahn, a shareholder, did not comment on plans for reopening.

Taste of Chengdu has been absolutely packed since it opened last August, but due to high tensions between management and staff recently, the bustling restaurant will take a vacation for July but they plan to come back better than ever. 

Ahn, who spoke to Orlando Weekly, plans that once they come back they’ll be renovated and redone and the Baldwin Park location will not be how it used to. They plan for it to be a reservation-only chef’s tasting atmosphere with a small number of seats. They will also try to have a liquor license at the spot. 

Ahn, also said that Chef Xiong “Tiger” Tang hasn’t had a single day off in more than three and a half years, so this vacation seems to be much needed, especially for the good of Taste of Chengdu. 

The original Taste of Chengdu on West Colonial Drive will also reopen along with Baldwin Park in August after being closed for almost 9 months due to renovations. Ahn has made no hints that once it returns, anything regarding the plans for the restaurant itself will be anything different than when it first opened. 

Taste of Chengdu is a Chinese restaurant that specializes in Sichuan cuisine, a province from southwest China. The eatery serves delicious authentic meals like dumpling noodles, Chengdu crispy duck, octopus, hot and sour soup, Lo mein, and more.
