Cheers to beer news coming from the Tampa Bay region. Big Storm Brewing Co. announced via social media yesterday their acquisition of Darwin Brewing Co. for an undisclosed amount. According to a Tampa Bay Times article, the purchase has been on the table for years but the pandemic urged Darwin’s Owners to make the deal final.

Darwin will join other brewing companies like Fat Point and Cape Coral in the Big Storm family. The acquisition will soon increase Darwin’s production levels and expand their distribution reach to put more beers in the hands of new customers.

Darwin Brewing Co. (DBC) found its start in 2012 as part of a Peruvian restaurant. When the restaurant closed in 2015, the brewery went solo and expanded to a fifteen-barrel facility to produce their take on culinary-inspired beers.

DBC could potentially get back to their culinary roots under the Big Storm roof, with discussions of integrating the brand into future plans for restaurants and taprooms. Their new parent company promises to keep along the DBC core beers like Cyan Pineapple Sour, a tart brew with a green hue from added Spirulina. For the hopheads, try Summadayze, a West Coast IPA with a hoppy bite to compliment spicy foods.

The new ties adds on to Big Storm’s 2022 plans for expansion. They’ve set their sights on a fifth taproom location in Ybor City which will not only pour Darwin beers but Big Storm’s own brand of vodka, rum, and malt whiskey from their distillery in Clearwater. The new taproom and restaurant is expected to open Spring 2022.
